What is Trichology?

Trichology is the scientific study of the structure, function and diseases of the human hair and scalp. It evolved as a recognised profession in 1902 when a group of individuals including doctors, scientists and hairdressers collaborated to form what is now known as The Institute of Trichologists.

When seeking the professional services of a trichologist is is important to check that they are a registered member of The Institute of Trichologists or another equally recognised professional body. Registration requires the practitioner to obey a strict code of ethics on professional practice guidelines. A fully qualified trichologist has studied and successfully completed a comprehensive education program over several years. Trichology is largely unregulated and there are many individuals that will prosper from offering hair-loss treatments and advice to vulnerable individuals. Be cautious of anyone offering free consultations as they may tie you into expensive treatment programs. Some trichologists have areas of specialism and often they have other qualifications and experience that may be of value when searching for the right trichologist. If in doubt never hesitate to enquire about your trichologist’s qualifications and experience or seek advice from the Institute of Trichologists.

Why consult a trichologist?

If you are looking for a qualified professional opinion and guidance that you can trust then consult with a registered trichologist.

There are many reasons why a person may wish to consult a trichologist from hair loss (alopecia), hair thinning, scalp disorders ranging from itchy (pruritic) scalps and dandruff to more inflammatory conditions such as seborrhoeic eczema and psoriasis or hair texture and condition problems or advice on choosing the right hair restoration surgeon. Whilst many people may choose to see their General Practitioner, some may feel too embarrassed for what may seem like a trivial matter. Trichologists can give a time honoured appointment and an holistic over view of the problem or condition, often liaising and collaborating with other members of the allied healthcare team or other specialists.
