Understanding Women's Hair Loss

About one-third of women experience hair loss (alopecia) at some time in their lives. Among postmenopausal women, as many as two-thirds suffer hair thinning or bald spots. Hair loss often has a greater effect on women than on men, because it's less socially acceptable for them. Alopecia can severely affect a woman's emotional well-being, causing psychological distress and impaired quality of life.

Women are more conscious of subtle degrees of hair loss. Consequently, women often present with hair shedding prior to the development of reduction in hair volume, particularly over the crown.
There are many potential causes of hair loss, including medical conditions, genetic predisposition, medications, and physical or emotional stress. If you notice unusual hair loss of any kind, it's important to see a registered trichologist, to determine the cause and commence appropriate treatment if necessary.
Successfully treating women for hair loss problems requires careful review of the medical, nutritional, hormonal and lifestyle history, undertaken in a systematic and logical way. Examination of the scalp may identify a widening of the central parting, with or without a diffuse reduction in hair density throughout the scalp. Some specific base line blood tests should be undertaken to establish or rule out any coexistent pathologies before deciding on a treatment regime.
This will provide a clearer understanding of the primary problem and enable treatment of the cause rather than only the symptoms.
Early diagnosis and initiation of treatment is desirable as treatments are often more effective at arresting progression of hair loss than stimulating regrowth. Adjunctive treatments such as counseling, cosmetic camouflage and hair transplantation are important measures for some patients.
